The Dirty Truth About Skincare Chemicals (And What to Use Instead)
Share
What's Really in Your Skincare?
Most of us spend time reading food labels, but how often do we flip over our moisturizer or face wash and actually read what's in it? The skincare industry is largely self-regulated, which means products can contain ingredients that are irritating, hormone-disrupting, or even harmful with long-term use — and they don't have to tell you in plain language.
At Purple Monkey Beauty, we believe you deserve to know exactly what you're putting on your skin. Here's a breakdown of the most common offenders found in mainstream skincare, and why we've chosen to formulate without them.
6 Harmful Skincare Chemicals to Watch Out For
1. Parabens (Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben)
Parabens are synthetic preservatives used to extend shelf life in everything from moisturizers to shampoos. The problem? They're known endocrine disruptors — meaning they can mimic estrogen in the body and interfere with hormonal function. Studies have detected parabens in human breast tissue, raising concerns about their long-term safety.
What to look for on labels: Any ingredient ending in "-paraben."
2. Sulfates (SLS & SLES)
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) are foaming agents that create that satisfying lather in cleansers and body washes. But that lather comes at a cost: sulfates strip the skin of its natural oils, disrupting the moisture barrier and leaving skin dry, tight, and more prone to irritation and breakouts.
Who's most affected: People with sensitive, dry, or eczema-prone skin.
3. Synthetic Fragrances
"Fragrance" or "parfum" on an ingredient list is a catch-all term that can legally hide hundreds of undisclosed chemicals — including known allergens and irritants. Synthetic fragrances are one of the leading causes of contact dermatitis and skin sensitivity reactions.
The rule of thumb: If an ingredient list just says "fragrance" without specifying the source, be cautious.
4. Phthalates
Often used to make fragrances last longer or to soften plastics in packaging, phthalates are another class of endocrine disruptors. They've been linked to reproductive issues and developmental concerns, and like parabens, they can accumulate in the body over time.
5. Mineral Oil & Petrolatum
Derived from petroleum, mineral oil and petrolatum are cheap moisturizing agents found in many mainstream lotions and lip balms. While they create a barrier on the skin, they don't actually nourish it — they just sit on top, potentially clogging pores and preventing your skin from breathing and absorbing beneficial ingredients.
6. Formaldehyde-Releasing Preservatives
Ingredients like DMDM Hydantoin, Imidazolidinyl Urea, and Quaternium-15 slowly release formaldehyde over time to preserve products. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and a common skin sensitizer. These preservatives are still widely used in shampoos, conditioners, and body lotions.
Why Clean Beauty Isn't Just a Trend
Your skin is your largest organ, and it absorbs a significant portion of what you apply to it. Choosing products free from harmful chemicals isn't about being precious — it's about protecting your long-term health while still getting real, visible results.
Clean beauty means formulating with ingredients that are both effective and safe: plant-derived actives, naturally sourced emollients, and gentle preservatives that don't come with a list of health concerns attached.
What We Use Instead
Every Purple Monkey Beauty product is 100% vegan and formulated without parabens, sulfates, synthetic fragrances, phthalates, or petroleum-derived ingredients. Instead, we use ingredients chosen for their proven efficacy and skin-loving properties:
- Almond Oil & Shea Butter — rich, plant-based emollients that deeply moisturize without clogging pores, found in our Natural Sugar Face Scrub
- Aloe Vera — a naturally soothing, hydrating botanical that calms inflammation and replenishes moisture, the star of our Refreshing Aloe Mist
- Mulberry Extract & Lactic Acid — gentle, plant-derived brighteners that even skin tone without harsh bleaching agents
- Vitamin E — a natural antioxidant that protects skin from free radical damage and supports barrier repair
And with our Alpha Glow Moisturizer, you get everyday luminosity powered entirely by clean, purposeful ingredients — no fillers, no shortcuts.
How to Read a Skincare Label Like a Pro
You don't need a chemistry degree to make smarter choices. Here are a few quick tips:
- Ingredients are listed in descending order by concentration — the first five ingredients make up the bulk of the formula.
- Watch for vague terms like "fragrance," "parfum," or "proprietary blend" — these can hide problematic chemicals.
- Look for certifications like vegan, cruelty-free, or clean beauty seals as a starting point, but always read the full ingredient list.
- When in doubt, less is more — simpler formulas with recognizable ingredients are usually safer.
Your Skin Deserves Better
Making the switch to clean skincare doesn't mean sacrificing results. It means choosing products that work with your skin rather than against it — formulas that nourish, protect, and deliver visible improvements without the hidden cost to your health.
